Day 44 - (5/10/11) “Get Your Kicks on Route 66” ( We are in Shamrock, Texas)

We waited for them to come down,
but had to move on
Here are the scars left from the
repelling ropes.

What a wonderful day this has been!  We spent the day going down memory lane in many respects.  But first we still had some box canyons to explore at our campground from last night.  There were walls of red sandstone where folks could climb and repell down (not sure i have that spelled correctly).  We saw folks getting ready to come back down but couldn’t wait - sorry no pictures of them repelling.
Route 66 is called Will Rodgers Highway -
I didn'tknow that!
Before we left Oklahoma we visited two museums devoted to Route 66 memories.  The first was in Clinton (after going through, complete with songs from the different eras, we had to stop for hamburgers for lunch - it was absolutely
They had cars and music from every era

necessary!).  At the second stop we had to buy mugs (and speaking of mugs - get a load of the mug shots of us in the old cars they set up like cars in old drive-in theaters!  We had a blast there!!
Usually Davis was in the driver's seat!
(Remember thosespeakers on the side?)

Oh, my! (By the way, that's a
direct quote from my sister-
chick, Libby.)

This is probably where I belong!
Big, open spaces and wonderful skies.
What they say about Texas is true - it’s really larger than life!  Things are spread out and far apart.  The elevation is high, the temperature is high but the humidity is low.

Ok then, we won't pick up any!  Where
would they sit, anyway?

This is the service station from the movie.
It is now the chamber of commerce, I think.
Thanks for the DVD player, John!

We are in the town that the movie “Cars” was based on.  Several of the characters were based on real folks from right here and the lady at the campground knew them all!  At the campground we borrowed the movie from her and watched it outside while we ate our dinner.  We laugh and cried and loved every minute of it.  What a great adventure we are having!

Remember all the days we talked about how much rain there was; how they couldn’t buy a sunny day?  Well, this place can’t buy a rainy day!  The grass is so crunchy here it  hurts my feet to walk in flip flops.  And Davis couldn’t put the screw-stake in the ground to tie up Precious because the ground is so hard and dry - he had to tie her up to a branch on a tree.  What

a new perspective we are getting on the size of our country.
Dana, I sent you a book today and a kit for Miss Alexis.  Clyda, I mailed that red sand sample at the same time.  Please let me know when you get these.  Thanks.
Sorry we have been out of cell phone and e-mail range for two days.  It was interesting to be totally out-of-tech-touch!  Margaret, I look forward to reading your new entry tomorrow and will sign up for the magazine.
Hello tonight to Ed, Judy, my sweet Alexis and Jackie.  How are things Dick and Susie?  Anyone in New Zealand reading that we will be touring the South Island in February? Art and Jan, want to come with us?
Earl, Emily and Eddie - thinking of you three everyday and glad to hear from you.
I’m fading fast . . . “talk” to you tomorrow.
Shalom,  Heather . . .
