Day 14 - A Note From Davis

We've been on the road for 14 days now and we're still leaving home.  All of the people and places bring back such good memories...

A friend said yesterday it was bittersweet; good to see everyone but hard to leave.  So I've decided that we will never really leave.  These roots are too deep to pull up.  When we left Richmond in 1974 those roots were not so deep and transplanted readily.  We'll grow new roots in Oregon, meet new friends (already have) but to an extent we'll never leave North Carolina.

Some notes on transportation and technology:

The truck and Airstream have performed flawlessly.  The truck is powerful and pulls us up the hills and lets us gently down the other side.  We have averaged about 14 and1/2 miles per gallon on the first 2000 miles, which I think is pretty good.  We've paid anywhere from $3.75 to $3.99 per gallon, which is not what we planned on when we started thinking about this trip 2 years ago, but as my good friend Mike would say, "it is what it is".

The Airstream is comfortable, pulls great, warm in the cold and cool in the heat, and DRY in the rain!  We've worked out where things are, or should be, and don't  worry about the dirt we track in because we have a new little vacuum cleaner!

The Verizon wireless USB stick for the Internet is really slick.  We can connect from most anywhere (Topsail was the worst connection) and it is much faster than the connection we had at home.  We bought a new camera on Saturday, a small Cannon which reacts much faster when we are driving and Heather sees something she wants to photograph (sounds like such an old fashioned word).  It's not quite as fancy as Michelle's, but it does the job.

Shalom, Davis
